What is Defender's Quest II?

Defender’s Quest II: Mists of Ruin, or DEFQ2, is the sequel to Defender’s Quest: Valley of the Forgotten (DEFQ1), a critically acclaimed Tower Defense / RPG Hybrid.

Who is developing Defender's Quest II?

DEFQ2 is being developed by Level Up Labs, LLC, the same friendly people who brought you the first game! We are teaming up with a few new partners since last time, you can read about them all on the team page.

Who else is involved?

OpenFL technologies, LLC is on retainer as a tech consultant for our engine.
Creative Intelligence Arts (of Project Phoenix fame) is helping us with music

What's new in Defender's Quest II?

The story, setting, and characters are all new -- it takes place in an entirely different universe from DEFQ1. Mechanics-wise, we’re keeping what worked from DEFQ1, and improving on the rest. We’ll also have an HD-friendly art style by Karen Petrasko and the cutscenes will be much better this time around!

When is the release date?

It’s hard to estimate how long game development takes -- it’ll be done when it’s done, but we’ll do our best to give you frequent updates on the game’s progress.

What platforms will it be for?

PC (Mac/Win/Linux), first and foremost. Steam and GOG have confirmed they will both carry the game on release. We are currently looking into consoles as well, but whether we decide to pursue them depends a lot on how the pre-order campaign goes.

We’ll also have a free web demo at launch :)

Will it be available for iOS / Android?

Maybe, we haven’t decided. If so, it would only be for tablets, not phones.

Can I have a press/review copy?

Sure, but not until we’re a lot closer to release. Sign up for our mailing list to get updates!

What (programming) language is Defender's Quest II coded in?

Haxe, which is a major change from DEFQ1, which was written in Flash ActionScript and used Adobe AIR. In short, Haxe lets us target multiple platforms and compile the game in C++ on native targets for maximum performance, while still letting us create an easily accessible web demo.

What (human) language(s) will Defender's Quest II be available in?

Other than English, we can’t say just yet. We’ll try to support multiple languages at launch. I’ll update this page if/when this changes.

Can I make a suggestion or give feedback?

Sure! There’s no guarantee we’ll put it in the game, but we’re always glad to hear your thoughts. Just remember, if you share your ideas with us, you’re giving us permission to use them for free.

How can I reach you?

Go to the contact and community pages, or follow us on Twitter, Facebook, or our forums.

Can I make "Let's Play" videos of your games?

Yes, and you can monetize them too. We feel strongly about this, which is why we started this wiki page and reddit thread collecting lists of developers who allow the practice.

What if I have a different question?

Post it on our forums and we'll answer it!

Pre-Orders

I'm an Alpha/Beta backer, how do I get access?

Alpha users currently have access, we have not opened things up for Beta users yet.

There are two things I need to do to give you access:

  • Elevate your Level Up Labs forum privileges
  • Send you a google drive invite to the folder where we store the game builds

So, you should do this:

  • Sign up for an account on our forum
  • Send an PM email* to leveluplabs+dqpreorder@gmail.com
  • In that email, also provide:
    • The email address you pre-ordered with
    • The email address you want the google invite sent to (if different from above)

Sorry this process is a bit clunky and powered by hand. So far it's working out okay!

*new forum users can't PM for a day or so, so email is the best bet.

How does a "4-pack" work?

Simple - you buy 4 copies of that tier, at a 25% discount. You can buy 4-packs of any non-limited tier. These copies are all individually giftable.

When will I get my stuff?

As soon as it’s available. The soundtrack and book will probably be done before the game itself, and we’ll send those out as soon as they’re ready. Alpha and Beta invites will go out as soon as the game reaches the appropriate stage.

What is the "ending credits" battle?

DEFQ1 had several out-of-story bonus battles, and DEFQ2 is no different. One of these bonus battles will be a super-special fight where every monster represents somebody in our ending credits. If a preorder tier puts your name in the credits, you get a monster in the battle. Each wave will have a heading, like “Contractors” or “Testers.” Select tiers will put you in either “Special Friends,” “Smithies,” “Monster Tamers,” “Cartographers,” or “Immortals.” The higher the tier, the cooler the monsters in those waves will be, starting with identical, regular monsters in “Special Friends,” and unique boss creatures for “Immortals.”

Why didn't you use kickstarter?

A lot of reasons. Most of all, we wanted to build a very specific experience, and we’re committed to make this game no matter how much funding we get, this is just your opportunity to get in early and get some rewards.

Here's a longer answer.

If I preorder now, can I upgrade to a higher tier later?

Maybe. I've been talking to Humble Store about this, and they say it's technically possible but a bit labor intensive to do the upgrades by hand. If there's enough demand for this, I will try to look into an automated solution with them.

In the meantime, just contact us directly and we'll make sure you're taken care of.
