Reptiles

Postby Buzko » Wed Sep 12, 2012 10:36 pm

Hi all,

Read about this on RPS the other day, downloaded the demo and then bought the full game before finishing it. Looks wonderful.

I'm thinking of recommending it to my sister, who loves Plants vs Zombies and I'm sure would dig the art style. However, she has Views about the portrayal of reptiles (snakes and dragons especially) in popular culture (the Bible, Harry Potter etc). If you have to slaughter lots of them to progress, I'll send her elsewhere (this was somebody who made me deal with the Weighted Companion Cube in Portal).

I'm looking forward to completing the main quest, so would appreciate an answer without spoilers

Thanks much,

Buzko

There are no unfriendly reptiles in this, only mutants and undead. There are dragons, but they're on your side and fight with you.

The clopsest thing would be like splitters I guess? Kind of snakeish? That and the cutscene of an undead dragon very late in the game.

Serpent.

Some say these swimming worm revenant split off from bouyant human revenant.

Others suggest they grew from the corpses of fish and river snakes.

There's an undead plague going about. It's possible some river snakes were consumed, though you won't meet them much in your first play through.

Dragons are on your side, but the enemy coopts some dead dragons with the undead plague for his morally suspect plans.

You never actually fight any undead dragon, though, and there's no actual killing of serpents or snakes anywhere. Why are you guys going out of your way to give this person a reason not to purchase the game? :(

Because there are some serpenty like enemies who you kill and we don't wish the sister to dislike the game. While your point of view seems to be more positive for the creators- the game is probably ok, don't push her away from it unnecessarily- if it turned out she was really sensitive to killing undead river snakes (even though serpents aren't portrayed as evil, any more than humans are portrayed as evil because they can be undead unlike harry potter where slytherins and serpents are always chaotic evil) and hated it she might well leave a very negative review and turn a lot of people off the game. It's best that only people who would really enjoy the game buy it and review it. The game is pretty awesome so there are more than enough people who will buy it even if she doesn't.

Basically, more information>> less information.

As a side note, on pure apparence, there is nothing serpentine, and a dragon only in one cut scene - while being obviously mind controlled by the big bad.

The only ennemy with a serpentine apparence is the snake-men, which more or less ressemble a naga, but seem created from human flesh.

In any case, neither snake nor dragon are shown as being evil. Undead of all sort are not even evil, just used for bad purpose (and created from corpse, but that's the necromancer the problem here ...). Dragon are shown as jerk with an heart of gold at worst.

The Ranged Revenant are in the first appearance shown as being the inhabitants of the village. There's only theories about bad reptiles, but definitely good reptiles.
